FTP troubleshooting

Last Updated: Jan 21, 2022

There are a lot of things that can cause your FTP to not work as it should. But don’t panic! Below are a few steps you can take to get your FTP working again.

The first thing you should do is make sure you are using the right settings to connect. The settings are as follows:

  • Username: Your hosting username
  • Password: Your hosting password
  • Server/hostname: hsxx.name.tools (replaces the x's with your serve number. Ie. hs12.name.tools)
  • Port: 21

If you are not sure what your hosting username or password is, you can refer to our guide here to find the username and change the password if necessary.

If these settings don’t work, there are a few things you can do. First, try changing the server/hostname to either the Hosting IP Address or the Web Hosting Server. These things can be found on your Web Hosting Dashboard.

Another thing to try is changing your web hosting password. Occasionally, your cPanel can fall out of sync with your Name.com account, causing it to not recognize the credentials you have put in. Changing the password causes the system to re-sync, and may solve the problem.

The next thing you should do is make sure you aren’t trying to use secure SSH settings, as this is an extra layer of security that is not automatically enabled on our servers. Some systems default to this though, especially those running on Windows 8. You may need to apply for SSH access by sending us an email at support@name.com.

One thing that may be causing the problem is if your IP address has been temporarily blocked for too many failed login attempts. You should send us an email with any troubleshooting steps you have tried and your IP address. (You can check your IP address at name.com/ip if you aren’t sure.) Our techs will be happy to get you up and running again!
