Check transfer status

Last Updated: Dec 07, 2022

When transferring a domain into Name.com from another registrar, it is in motion as soon as the transaction is complete and goes through several stages. Sometimes the transfer may get stuck, so it’s important to check the status and see why it may be stalling. This tutorial explains a few of the common statuses you may encounter and how to resolve them. You can check on the status at any time on the transfers in progress page.

  1. Log in to your Name.com account.
  2. Go to your Account Overview by clicking on the User icon (user-icon.png), located at the top right, open the drop-down menu and click Account.
  3. Scroll down until you see Transfers in Progress.

What does the transfer statuses mean?

The possible statuses are:

Transfer Submitted: This transfer is progressing smoothly! The registry has requested a transfer from the losing registrar. If the losing registrar does nothing, the transfer will automatically complete 5-7 days from the transfer request date. Please contact your old registrar if you would like to expedite this process. If/when they do, it should complete within a few hours. Name.com is unable to speed up incoming transfers.

Pending Unlock: If your domain has the status of "ClientTransferProhibited" it means it's locked and cannot move forward in the transfer process. You can look up the status of the domain by doing a whois query. To correct the problem, please unlock the domain with your current registrar. The domain name is still locked at the previous registrar. Domain names that are locked can’t transfer.  If you need any help unlocking your domain, please contact the registrar you’re transferring from. Once the domain is unlocked it should have the status "OK", and the transfer will proceed on its own.

Pending New Auth Code: The registry is not accepting the authorization code provided when the transfer was initiated. The domain name will not be able to transfer without a new authorization code. Please contact your old registrar and ask them to confirm/update your authorization code, or help you generate a new one.. Then enter the new authorization code on the TRANSFERS IN PROGRESS page.

  1. From the TRANSFERS IN PROGRESS page, check the box to the left of your domain name.
  2. Click the dropdown arrow to the right of EDIT MULTIPLE
  3. Click UPDATE AUTH CODES
  4. Input your new auth code and save changes.

Rejected: The losing registrar has rejected your transfer. No explanation is shared with Name.com so we suggest you contact the losing registrar and they can explain and assist further.

Completed: The transfer is complete and the domain is in your Name.com account ready for use!

Note: When transferring a domain name between registrars, the transfer is initiated from the gaining registrar’s end. Therefore, if you are transferring a domain name away from Name.com, you will not be able to view the current status of the transfer. You will need to contact the registrar you’re transferring to for the transfer status.
